Inclusive π 0 and K 0 S in γγ reactions at L 3

The ee → eeπ + X and ee → eeKS + X reactions are studied at LEP using data collected with the L3 detector at √ s = 189−202 GeV. Preliminary results for the differential cross section dσ/dpT in the transverse momentum range 0.2 GeV < pT < 7.5 GeV at central values of pseudo-rapidity, |η| < 0.5 or |η| < 1.5, and the differential cross section dσ/d|η| for different values of pT are presented. For pT ≤ 1 GeV, the pT−dependence of the data are well described by an exponential fit. For pT > 1 GeV the cross sections are compared to NLO QCD calculations and to LO Monte Carlo predictions.

We analyze the γγ → π 0 π 0 and γγ → π + π − reactions using the master formula approach to chiral symmetry breaking. The pertinent vacuum correlators are estimated at tree level, and the results are compared with one-and two-loop chiral perturbation theory. The Compton scattering amplitude and the pion polarizabilities are also discussed.
